Smoking doubles the damage to the body caused by diabetes by causing hardening of the arteries. This particularly affects the body's larger arteries to the legs and brain, making amputation and strokes more likely.
Constriction of the arteries in both cases (Diabetes and smoking) which may lead to gangrene of the limbs, especially the lower limb, which might lead to amputation. Narrowing of other arteries might occur leading to deficiency in blood supply to the corresponding organs.
