For Cigarette Smokers. Why do we smoke?

Posted on Mar 30, 2009 under Smoke | 5 Comments

I smoked for 16 years. I am on my third day of not smoking, and I am trying to figure out why I smoked to begin with. I have had so many reasons for quitting and recieved a ton of support from the people here at Q&A. Now my question is; Why do we smoke?

  1. it relaxes your body and makes you feel a lil bit stronger. plus if you are addicted to nicotine then you have to smoke to get enough of it.

I tryed a cig once, but that was cause i was like 7 years old and saw my big sister smoking, but then after that i never tryed it again, cause i learned that its bad for you.

My sister took up smoking now this year. And its owful. Shes always coughing, coughing up mucus. Its not a good thing to do. So many problems come with it. If we have to live this life, wouldn't you want to live it without problems, and complications? I would. I don't want to live with cancer, or have to breathe through a tube in my neck. Its not worth it. I want to live normal and happy. I don't know why people smoke. A escape from reality. Escape from the pain in their daily lives.

Im so glad your not smoking anymore. That you quit if you have. Im so proud of you if you have. Good job!

well, causeit relaxes us, relieves the stress and it makes us feel good. thoughit'svery addictive. good for you, you're starting toquit smoking. me,i told mysel, i'd stop when i reach my 30th birthday, so as when i reach 40, my lungs would be clear. causeit takes 10 years or more to have healthy lungs again.

  4. There are soooooooo many answers to that question and it's going to be hard to list them all I hope you don't mind the simplified answers.

First as children we see that it's something that adults do and we say "hey I want to be an adult" So thats one reason.

People in authority at the time (Adults) don't want us to so we as natural anarchists are draw to it like drinking… etc.

Advertising and media promotion, movies- Anything from Joe camel to James Dean- For some strange reason it defined cool. And by using and emulating we were cool as well.

(Trust me if the Nose pickers of America United pooled their resources and hired a top advertising firm to make nose picking cool, at the end of the Month there would be celebrity nose pickers, cool tools for nose picking, teens with extreme picking….)

Plus hey its a great portable hobby, think about it what other great international hobby is there? You get soooo many cool toys to play with, different matches, lighters, cases, brands, different ones from exotic countries. The list is endless.

Unfortunatelly it is the one hobby that most likely has no beneficial practical result unless you consider mass murder, suicide, pyromania, and the like beneficiall?

As a reformed smoker still fighting against temptation every damn day, I realise that the only reason I crave that smoke is to give in to the temptation, it feels good to want something that bad sometimes. It's that first guilty drag when you give in, that almost erotic tingle that passes throught our bodies, followed quickly by the total male response of damnnnn what the hell did I just do!

I smoked because I thought it looked cool, it kept my hands busy, it eased boredom, and it made me feel full after I ate. But most importantly I thought it was my friend. It comforted me when I was sad, gave me company and purpose, and by God if I lost them I would tweak till I found them. When I quit I realised the little voice in my head that told me to "Go ahead, have one. You'll feel better." was a lying sack of crap that only controled me, made me subhuman. I'm glad I quit and happy that you did too. Stick to it my friend. It's the most freeing choice you can make.
