IE when my best friend opens a door for me and says, "age before beauty". I am older than she is, and she is using that fact to intimate that she is the more attractive. I usually respond with, "and pearls before swine" as I walk through the door.

it means that, when choosing a person as a spouse or significant other ….
you should choose the one who might be older, rather than the one who is beautiful.
Beauty can fade, but a person who is wonderful will still be wonderful when they’re older
