Posted on Feb 23, 2010 under Man and woman | 17 CommentsIf the states use christian views to define marriage between a man and woman, does that definition impede on individuals who do not believe in the Cristian religion?

That is why a lot of states are making gay marriage legal. Not everyone is christian there are 100s of other religons and not everyone even has a religon, and besides this country is based on church and state being SEPERATE.

yes where is the separation of church and state?

Marriage between a man and a woman is not only a Christian definition. So the states are not relying strictly on Christian definitions.

Definitely. Not every religion believes that marriage has to be between a man and a woman. Our country is supposed to have freedom of religion, but considering how many of our laws are based on Christianity sometimes you have to wonder.

It concerns all people who are straight and moral.
I totally think it should always be between a man and
a woman. And even though not everyone a christian, when it comes to beliefs and whatever, everyone is a christian in some ways.

separation of church and state
it’s a law, so your Christian values honestly don’t matter. Muslims believe women should wear viels over their faces, can’t vote, can’t go anywhere without a man, if we had Muslims running our country, I bet you wouldn’t like that.

Well since our country was founded as a christian nation, and christian doctrine is thoroughly embedded in both our constitution, judicial system, and social mores, who cares?
If they are offended they are free to live in any country ending in -stan

Yes. Absolutely. And it also discriminates against people who have different ideas of what constitutes a marriage or a relationship.
The only fair thing we can do in this country is STOP giving civil status to a religious institution. We should no longer recognize marriage as a legal contract.
All people who wish to establish a legal relationship for purposes of holding property, providing for children, managing health care, etc, should have to write a specific Domestic Partnership Agreement that spells out the terms of their relationship, what is shared, what is not, what are the conditions of the relationship, and how to dissolve the partnership should the contract be violated by one party or the other. Gay people do this all the time, and when such a document is in place, the parting of ways is generally very much less messy.

Firstly I do support gay marriage… BUT
I think this issue is misunderstood, the act of a MARRIAGE IS a christian idea. If you take the religion out of it it is called a CIVIL UNION. And although government should not impose a single religion on people it also cannot force churches to allow gay marriage because of seperation of church and state. Therefore the decision to allow gay MARRIAGE is not up to the government but the church.
The church will not change because streight men and women who are already married… according to a friend of mine… feel that it lessens the sanctity of their own marriage.
Part of this is due to the Hollywood image of gays, the gay population is portrayed as a very flamboyant and feminine. Or gay women who are very manly. When there are streight men who act that way and gay men who do not. But this stereotype causes discomfort in our society because it is different. But we must remember being gay does not change ones gender, thus these stereotypes are, or at least should be misleading. Simply because someones sexual preference is different does not mean their entire manor must change to that of the opposite sex.
But the entire christian world and religion does not understand this and only sees the stereotype, which makes christians and many streight people uncomfortable. And why not, Im streight but if some woman were to start acting as gays were portrayed in the hollywood stereotype ex: going around saying how into men she is, and pointing out everyone she thinks is cute and goes around touching every one of them… I too would be a little put off. Sexual life and attitudes should not be a public matter, and should not make one an attraction.

A number of points on this subject:
1. 80% of all Americans define themselves as "Christians"
2. Problem is, there are over 2600 different "officialy" recognized denominations of "Christianity" alone ~ not even getting into Buddism, Hindus, Moslems, Native-American religions.
3. At 49, and after having wasted 18-1/2 years with two different women in two separate long distance relationships, I say if wherever you can find so-called, "ture love and happines" go for it!
4. Most same sex relationships don’t have the best track record for longeivity and stability.
The "Moral Majority" or "Christian Right" need to stay the hell out of my house ~ not to mention my bedroom!

If you knew where the founding fathers were, I’m sure they could answer that question.
They never asked us to set the speed limits but we abide by them.Right?

The majority of people in the US are Christian.
Majority rules.Simple math.

Their are several religions out there that are not Christian that get married under their beliefs & certain states do recognize the union as a legal marriage.
February 23rd, 2010 at 7:13 am
Well, if there is one thing our government does right it is go with the mass mentality. Since the major religion is Christianity then they go with it. Putting everyone under the same heading. You can bet that if there were a more popular bandwagon (not that religion is a bandwagon, don’t get me wrong) they would be on that too, in a second.
Unfortunately for the people that aren’t Christian, they are put under our law. Apparently their beliefs don’t "count".
I’m sure no government can please everyone all the time but it is not fair to not take into account the many other religious beliefs.
In a way it’s like a weird form of conversion. "If you don’t believe what we believe we will just make it illegal for you to practice what you believe." "I’m sorry, pursuit of happiness? You must be thinking of some other country."
