You can’t get a person to quit smoking. The person has to want to quit for himself (I’ll use "he" since I don’t know if the person is "he" or "she"). Smoking is a tough addiction to shake.
Let the person know you will be there to support him when he decides to quit. Offer to help pay for meds like Zyban or the patch if that will help. Don’t put the person under a lot of pressure to quit as that won’t work. Remember he would probably like to quit very much, but it is hard. Let him know you would like for him to be around for a long time and if he doesn’t stop smoking you are afraid he won’t be. Offer to accompany him to a doctor or clinic or support group that might be able to help.
1-800-ACS-2345 is a help line for those who want to quit. It is quite good and the counselors are experienced in the work.
There are tons of websites with smoking cessation information. When he is ready to quit refer him to some of them. I have included a few.
