I want to suscribe to a magazine that is a mix of Complex magazine or XXL and something like Cosmopolitan or Seventeen. Any suggestions?

Woman, Culture, Beauty & Media?

Do you think in the societies that restricts woman from exposing any part of themselves (burqa) OR even in the cultures that are not so repressive, but make them cover their hair and most of thier face except for the eyes in public, is affected by the glamorizing of women in the media?

Do you think they feel the peer-pressure to look a certain way and go through plastic surgery even though they are never seen in public?

I have heard woman say that they do not do all that for a mans benefit, but to make themselves look better than other woman. If there is no public competition for male attention is there a need to look thin and beautiful as a western style super model? Is heavy attractive in those cultures where thin isn’t advertised and stereotyped as attractive?
In the societies that do not allow TV. Do they still feel the insecurities of body self conscienceness if they are not exposed to Makeup, expensive elegant cloths and excersise to be in shape and tone? If everyone around them is as natural as them with flaws, would they even know what any other alternative beauty is other than the beauty of what they know as self acceptance in themselves?

Women – how do you deal with the annoyance of the stereotypes of beauty in western culture as you age?

Women – have you ever woken-up and just been TIRED of trying to fit into a mold of being size 2 or 4 and "perfect" on the outside? Yet at the same time fearing that if you didn’t you would be rejected and loose any sense of power/respect/admiration/attention in this culture?

At age 32 now, I feel like I am loosing my "power" and that as I age — I generally feel worthless about it. I decided to go to counseling about this – and investigate where these deep-seeded ideas of self-worth and beauty come from.

I am realizing that not only did get it from my mother – but everywhere I turned I was validated on my self-worth mostly for my looks growing up….now, as an aging 30 something —- I feel so threatened by women in their 20s and left feeling this – holy crap what do I do now…who am I… what does this mean? Can I feel "drop" this fear of what will happen if I am not perfect on the outside?

If you have encountered this —- how did you deal with it? Books? Resources? I am open to all advice – except flaming or nasty comments!
