Cave man diet: What did humans 20,000-40,000 years ago really eat? And would it be good for health?

Posted on Nov 18, 2008 under Diet and health | 2 Comments

I hear some people say that they only eat meat and vegetables because they believe that that’s what our ancient ancestors evolved to do best with. A lot of these people also pig out on steaks and eat no grains whatsoever, even if they’re “true” whole grains.

Then I see other sources say that it was the Neanderthals who ate mostly meat and that early Homo sapiens ate a variety of plant life more than they ate meat and that their more flexible diet may have been a possibility why they lived on and why Neanderthals didn’t.

Then I hear others who say that early humans had a lot higher proportion of omega-3 fatty acids in their diet compared to today and that less than 10% of their calories came from saturated fat, which is less than many modern human diets and definitely wouldn’t go along with those who like to pig out on steak all day long.

What did the earlier humans 20,000-40,000 years ago really eat?

And is there scientific evidence that this type of diet would be the healthiest for people now a days? I know that before Isaac Newton’s times, people would make observations and then form theories. Newton then said you have to actually test your theories after you form them. An example could be Sigmund Freud who earlier said that evolution revolves around sex because those who are more successful in that area are more likely to pass on their genes. Then Freud came up with all these sex theories for the mind, that he never tested. He basically claimed they were scientific because they were “inspired” by evolution. Today most experimental psychologists say that much of Freud was pseudo-psychology because using the scientific method involves testing your theories, not just saying a theory is good enough because it sounds scientific. So that’s why my second question is if there’s any scientific evidence that a cave man diet would be beneficial to humans? Like I know that they didn’t have medical technology 20,000-40,000 years ago, but regardless medical technology seems to be making people live longer. I’ve also heard that there are studies that whole grains are good for you, which probably weren’t around back then.

Thanks for any information you may have, even if it’s just partial :)

Vegan diet and mental health?

Posted on Nov 18, 2008 under Diet and health | 10 Comments

I’ve been on a vegan diet for about five or six months now (coming from a poor diet of pure crap), and my body has definitely slimmed down a lot.

Lately, though – and I have been inundated with some financial misfortune that upsets me – I have been completely crazy to the point where my parents want me to seek professional mental health in a psychiatric facility.

In February, after losing a job, I sank into a deep depression that I perked myself out of around April. I became fully vegan around the end of March, and didn’t think anything of it affecting me mentally. I started committing myself to activities to enrich myself: acting in short movies, writing, and taking online classes.

In June, I became very depressed again about the situation. Money was running tight.

In July, though, my mood became erratic – I would cry uncontrollably about subjects I didn’t know, pick fights with strangers, I would spend money on things I didn’t have, and lament with seething jealousy about what others had that I could no longer afford.

The culmination of these events happened last week, when I started crying at my grandmother’s dinner party and didn’t stop for seven hours. I found myself at the bottom of a bottle of wine and decided to jump in front of traffic at a busy highway withing walking distance to my house.

I lost my nerve, obviously, but kept crying and praying to God. I am not usually a very religious person – as of late, though, I’ve become increasingly neurotic and scrupulous.

The pinnacle of this was this past week where I got involved in a physical altercation with a stranger. I’m not a violent person, and usually shrug annoying/stupid people off. It was a typical stupid girlie fight that was over before it started and no security got involved or anything like that. I realized what I was doing while it was happening and walked away – then I cried for the rest of the night about what I had done and I felt terrible about it. We didn’t hurt each other – but I was just so disappointed by my despicable behavior.

Alcohol is involved in a lot of these incidents, but I’ve never been like that before – I’m somewhat of a tolerant drinker and drink socially without any problems.

I’m wondering, though, after doing some research, if my erratic actions are the result of mental deterioration due in part to veganism? Any thoughts?

Why don’t the food police and health officials mandate EXERCISE instead of pushing diet drinks & low fat food?

The health officials, (FOOD POLICE) seem to be so outraged about the diet of Michael Phelps who eats whatever he wants, and is in top shape. It’s too bad so many people fall for the low fat, diet soda myth. You can eat just about anything if you work it off, and include some beneficial fats in the diet, such as nuts and olive oil. I would like to know why doctors don’t tell diabetic patients that exercise and lower carbohydrate, higher fat diets actually lower insulin resistence levels in these people.

My mum is starting the lipobind diet and i am worried if it will affect her health?

Posted on Nov 16, 2008 under Diet and health | 2 Comments

She gets 3 packets a day to mix with water and drink and i was wondering if it will truly be benefiial for her or if it will join the list of other phony diets.

If you are on it yourself or know someone who is please let me know if it worked.

Thanks :)

Question for parents, please? Do you think that there should be a separate category for Teen Health and Diet?

Posted on Nov 16, 2008 under Diet and health | 4 Comments

Teens ask serious questions on adult sites and get a variety of answers that may be inappropriate for their age group. Example: suggestion for fasting diet that would be absolutely inappropriate for an unfinished growth process… Your thoughts?
Another example: A tweenie asks if she is fat. 6 out of 10 answers respond that yes she's obese. If your child uses Yahoo, wouldn't you want him/her respected as a young person and answered by people who actually would give appropriate information?
Dave! I'm copying the best (in my opinion) part of your answer here:
I personally believe that people should really behave better when it comes to others health! specially teenagers
